If you are a designer and wondering what could be the advantages of your learning how to code, read on.
There are a lot of instances where you encounter designers who don't know how to code. It is not really necessary for them to know coding. However, designers that know how to code also know how big of an advantage it is!
So, should designers learn how to code? And what are these advantages I mentioned before?
But first, let’s clear it up. When I asked if designers should learn coding, it is not equivalent to when someone asked if designers need to learn coding. Technically speaking, you don’t need to code when creating a design, especially when you are more focused on graphic design. But why should you learn it?
These are few of the many examples why:
1. Expand your Understanding
When you finally learn how to code, you will thoroughly understand more on how it will work when applied on an app/website. You will learn more about the limitations and constraints of the design you are working on.
2. Competitive Advantage
You will surely stand out to your competition when you are a designer AND can code. Having a more relevant skill is a huge advantage especially in the industry where employers are getting more and more demanding.
3. Open more Opportunities
Not only will you expand your skills from learning how to code, you can also open new and more opportunities. Your projects will get more attention from audiences; the attention to detail, accurate and perceived design quality, in result with knowing how to also work with codes.
4. Be more Motivated
Have you ever experienced a scenario where you are stuck in doing certain things over and over again and don’t know how to possibly spice it up a little? Like bringing your designs to life? Coding is basically like that, you can let your design breathe on your command and however you like it. The thing about being an expert in design alone is such a fulfillment, imagine knowing how to code. It is like unlimited power. Each day you will be more motivated to try something new for your designs.
5. Financial Growth
This may not come first in the list, but this probably is still one of the things to consider. Admit it or not, how much we earn can make us a little more productive. Not saying this should be a priority, but could be in desperate times. Knowing how to multitask is kind of an advantage. Designing alone can give you good and decent money, but just imagine the possibilities in terms of salary when you also know how to code.
For sure there are a lot more to add on this list. Nothing really is certain unless you do it, or at least try. When you are a designer, coding can be a little intimidating - that also works vice versa. There are also coders and programmers who are not that good and don’t focus on designing. Just not their forte. It is great to have something to focus on, to have an expertise and be a master of this one thing. But wouldn't it be best if we can explore and at least be good at other things? Think of it as a support, coding can support further opportunities and advances to your designs. An all-in-one package if you may.
