You don’t want any intruder wrecking and claiming all your possessions inside your own house, do you? You should also feel the same way to your website and treat it as if it is your sacred home. Websites - like it or not, can be vulnerable and sometimes are inevitable targets of hackers. Whatever the type of website you are running, they will always contain personal information.
For example, we tend to ignore the security of a blogging website, because we believe nothing is really important and is not worthy of hacking; but this is false. Hackers can access your email, your audience’s emails, modify the comments, threaten your viewers by pretending they are you - in short, identity theft. And onto the biggest and has the widest potential victims of hackers - the e-Commerce websites. E-Commerce mainly contains transactions like payments and exchange of other personal information. This is what most of the hackers target. You can lose control over your website, lose customers and lose all your money.
With the above discussed, this may all come and result in this one solution - Website Security. In order to prevent your website from getting hacked, you need to make sure it is protected and secured from hackers and even viruses, malwares and phishing attacks.
But how can you do it? What’s the most commonly used website security?
SSL or Secure Sockets Layer certificate is your way to go. You can easily install this for free or avail a subscription (this is for a much bigger website that contains a whole lot of transaction interaction.) SSL basically will act as the guard of your website. I know you have already come across a website with a padlock icon and the “https” - which the letter s is for SSL or security. If you do, that means that the website is secured and that SSL was installed for that website.
SSL encrypts data from login details credentials to processed payment details. If you are to visit a website and Google prevents you from entering the site, it is most likely because the website is not safe for you, it may lack security that will threaten your personal data. This is one of the best things of SSL, it also provides precautions to visitors not just to website owners. It is important to have SSL installed, mostly if your website collects information from your visitors, you don’t want to rob them - well, it’s not really you but also kinda like your fault too for not securing your website.
SSL is available through hosting providers. If you are the one who uploads or uploaded the website, you can see that most providers offer SSL installations too. They are mostly free or come in a package with your hosting provider.
You can also install the basic SSL for free like Let’s Encrypt.
If you don’t want to bother and don’t really want to risk your lack of experience, you can leave it to your website’s developer. You can hire developers that are also responsible for the security and maintenance of your website.
Speaking of experience, you don’t need to have any technical skills to install and trust SSL’s capabilities. It is easy, beginner-friendly and nothing can really go wrong!
