What do you think are the reasons why there are successful professionals and also professionals who didn’t make it? There are a lot of possibilities one has encountered that damaged their career. Either they made a bad decision or the career they have chosen isn’t really for them.
In the IT industry, the demand for developers is blowing up, they are everywhere at this moment. This is due to the fact that everything is digitalized, almost everything is available online. The digital world is rising and so aspiring IT specialists, scientists, programmers and developers are on the run to build their careers. However, things can get a little too exciting and overwhelming especially in your mid-career. You’ll get to do things that aren’t really your interest just because they are the trend, or didn’t value things as you thought they are not essential for your career growth. These things can damage you.
If you are a developer, I am sure you know how demanding the skills required from you to work. But there are few unspoken and sometimes even unwritten requirements, that when you are not aware of, will surely damage your career.
Here are some of the things to remember to NOT Damage your Career as a Developer:
Improve Your Soft Skills
We all want to have a positive colleague when it comes to our work environment. We respect who respects us and admire people who are always happy and positive. This also goes vice-versa. Our soft skills are the things that really mark on people’s minds. Yes, your technical background and skills are the priority for most jobs you will apply to and it will take you places, but trust me - or not, they are not really that gives you value. How you communicate, respond, react and solve things will help you grow.
Be Coachable
Nothing is wrong with admitting you do not not know how a certain thing works. You may be an expert but there sure are some holes that can be filled by other people. Let yourself be open to more possibilities. The internet and Google is proven reliable, but an actual and personal experience from a person has more to it.
Mentor
If you are coachable then it is better to know you can and should mentor other people too. Usually there are juniors, seniors and trainees in a company, this is a great opportunity to share your knowledge. Not only will they have more respect for you, it will also surely start a great collaboration that could lead to more projects in the future.
Know Your Worth
This goes both ways from payments to self-evaluation. You are the only absolute person that knows your capabilities, respect that. If someone wants your services, the payment for that should depend on the effort you will exert. If you think lowering the rates will result in more clients, this is somehow true but never actually lasts too long. The major effect of this is that clients will value you less.
Don’t Settle For Less
Being employed in a company can give us the feeling of financial assurance. What we don’t realize is that we unconsciously ignore our growth within the company. If you are not acquiring new skills and improving your skills, you may wanna ask yourself if it’s worth it to stay and settle.
Constant Practices
Practice makes perfect; true, but in this field, what really is perfect? Everything is upgrading, improving and updating almost everyday. When we know a lot about something, practice becomes off the list. Developers must know that we are in an industry where learning is nonstop.
If you even consider yourself failing as a Developer, it is not too late to get up again. Life can be tricky most of the time, it will make you doubt yourself but at the same time it will allow you to grow once you learn and acknowledge the more important things.
