Why MariaDB?

One of the most widely used database servers today is MariaDB Server. The original MySQL programmers created it and it will remain an open-source project.

Data is converted into structured information by MariaDB and then used by applications ranging from websites to banking. Because it is speedy, scalable, and dependable, MariaDB is used. Additionally, it features a robust ecosystem of plugins, storage engines, and other tools that enable it to be very customizable for a variety of use scenarios—initially developed as an improved drop-in alternative for MySQL.

The relational database MariaDB provides a SQL interface for data access as open-source software. The latest versions of MariaDB additionally have GIS and JSON features.

MariaDB Server will continue to remain Free and Open Source Software covered by GPLv2 independent of any commercial organizations.

The primary international point of contact for MariaDB Server collaboration is the MariaDB Foundation.

The Foundation is an American nonprofit with a Delaware incorporation. Contributors from both the private and business sectors sponsor it.

The Foundation's team helps MariaDB Server by:

  • Promoting the distribution and usage of MariaDB Server and other pertinent open-source software.
  • Reducing barriers for new contributors and supporting new contributors in understanding the source code.
  • As the contributor base grows, helping to develop new features, keeping an eye on the code's quality, and preserving the codebase's maintainability are all important.
  • Ensuring that manuals are updated as new features are created.
  • MariaDB is being ported and packaged to be accessible on as many platforms and operating systems as possible.
  • Speaking at events to encourage adoption.

While the Foundation's staff does make code contributions and certain development contributions to MariaDB, the Foundation's main objective is to encourage as many individuals as possible to collaborate in the successful development of MariaDB.
