Common UI Design Mistakes

Beginner or not, and I mean even professionals can still encounter errors and mistakes. And it couldn’t be any truer in the Programming and Web Development/Design industry. We learn by mistakes and grow with errors, it can be very intimidating at first but don’t let it fool you. Everything has a solution and every solution is limitless.

In this, we will focus on the most common UI Design Mistakes. UI or User Interface Design focuses on the looks and display of a website or software. It is basically what users see on the website.

Below are the few of the common UI design mistakes:

Bad Choice of Font - this also includes style and size. Font gives a huge impact to the overall design. Make sure to choose the right font that fits your concept.

Odd Space - let your design breathe. Learn proper spacing and put them in the right space for your elements to breathe and be put into a group.

Absence of Hierarchy - this mistake tends to confuse viewers. A designer should make sure that a group of texts or media can be easily identified - whether it is the title, a subtitle or the main paragraph. A correct use of color blocks could also be a huge help to distinguish the hierarchy.

Wrong Color Contrast - designers should consider the color contrast between the text and background. Having the right contrast can give a great impression to your audience. If the text is more readable then it is more engaging.

Color Mistake - just like the one above, a combination of a good color choice and right contrast can carry your whole website’s aesthetic. The color should match every element that surrounds it, the color should also stick to the concept of your brand.

Irrelevant image - you don’t want to put a picture of yourself out there and then leave a wrong name and message along with it, do you? Irrelevant images can cause serious confusion from a large group of audience. It also gives a bad impression on your website, it will look like you are not paying attention to the most obvious details.

If you are posting a blog about, let’s say a topic like “Life of a programmer.”, you don’t want to put an image of a person having fun and enjoying life, because that’s irrelevant to the topic. - this one is obviously a joke, but you get the point.

Shadow Hunter - as cringe as it may sound, there are shadow hunter designers that seem like they are enjoying too much use of shadow. This can be helpful but there are good and bad times when to use this. It gives emphasis to the element but can affect badly to the overall aesthetic of your design.

There are still a lot more to mention on this list, but these are just a few of the many mistakes. It can also help those who want to improve their UI Design portfolios. What else do you think is another common mistake?
